                 Helen Marnie

 


Marnie is the stage name of the British musician Helen Marnie (born in 21 February 1978 in Glasgow, Scotland). She is the lead vocalist and one of the songwriters and keyboardists of the electronic band Ladytron. She started a solo career in 2012 and self-released her debut solo album Crystal World on 11 June 2013.

Marnie is a classically trained pianist. She studied music at the University of Liverpool where she received a Bachelor of Arts in pop music in 1999. She was influenced by artists such as Kate Bush, Maria Callas, and Joni Mitchell. 

In the summer of 1999, the Liverpudlian producers and DJs Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu met the students Helen Marnie (through various DJ gigs) and Mira Aroyo (through a mutual friend). Sharing similar interests in music, they formed the electronic band Ladytron in the same year. Since then, Marnie is the lead singer of the band, and also plays synthesizers and contributes to songwriting.

Using the stage name of Marnie, she started in 2012 a solo career. On 29 May 2013, Marnie premiered the music video directed by Michael Sherrington for her debut single as solo artist, “The Hunter”.

Marnie self-released through PledgeMusic her debut solo album Crystal World on 11 June 2013. The album was produced in 2012 in Reykjavik, Iceland by her band mate Daniel Hunt in collaboration with the Icelandic musician Barði Jóhannsson.

On 9 September 2014, she premiered a new song, "Wolves."

MIRA AROYO


Mira Aroyo (in Bulgarian: Мира Аройо; born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 11 July 1977) is the secondary vocalist and one of the keyboardists and songwriters of the electronic band Ladytron. She is also a DJ. Aroyo writes and sings her songs for Ladytron in Bulgarian as well as English. 

Mira Aroyo was born in 1977 in Sofia, Bulgaria, to Bulgarian Hasidic background. Aroyo moved with her family to Israel when she was ten. The first musical instrument that she ever played was the guitar. Also when she was younger, she played the accordion. 

Aroyo was a postgraduate research geneticist in the Oxford University’s Biochemistry department. She co-authored an article on “Species specificity in the activation of Xer recombination at dif by FtsK”, published in Molecular Microbiology, 2003.

Aroyo collaborated with the indie pop band The Projects. The song “Don’t Eat Meat” featured Mira as vocalist. She also collaborated with John Foxx & The Maths for the song “Watching A Building On Fire”. She also collaborated on the final The Projects album, Elektrichka’s Favourite Party Record.

DANIEL HUNT

Daniel Hunt is an English musician, songwriter and producer. He's a founding member, principal songwriter and producer of the electronic band Ladytron.

He met Reuben Wu in Liverpool in 1995 and formed Ladytron with him in 1999, along with Mira Aroyo and Helen Marnie.

In 2003, he set up the Liverpool club, Evol and subsequently collaborated in 2005 on the celebrated Korova bar in the city.[1] In addition to the band, he also DJ's around the world both solo and with other band members.[2] His vocals are featured in the Ladytron' songs "International Dateline" and "Versus".

He has produced other artists such as Christina Aguilera, Marina Gasolina and Niue, and remixed the likes of Dave Gahan, Soulwax, Placebo, Simian, Paul Weller and Blondie.

He has worked on several movie scores, including that of Would You Rather starring Sasha Grey, in collaboration with Icelandic friend Barði Jóhannsson. Hunt joined Pink Industry as guitarist for their first show in 25 years in January 2012 at Cine Joia, São Paulo, Brazil.

Hunt produced Ladytron band mate Helen Marnie's debut solo album Crystal World, that was released in 2013. He is currently producing the forthcoming sixth Ladytron album, and working on other unrelated projects.

REUBEN WU

Reuben Wu (born 1975) is a British musician and member of the electronic band Ladytron. His role in the band is keyboardist, songwriter and producer. He is also an accomplished photographer and a DJ.

Wu grew up in North West England. He's a classically trained violinist. Wu trained in Industrial Design at Sheffield Hallam University. He graduated in 1997 and finished his MSc in 1998 at University of Liverpool before working as an industrial designer for Team Consulting in Cambridge until going full-time with the band in 2002. Wu drew the cover of the UK edition of Ladytron's first album 604.

He met Daniel Hunt in Liverpool in 1994 and formed Ladytron with him in 1999, along with Mira Aroyo and Helen Marnie.

Wu and Hunt set up the Liverpool club night Evol and bar Korova.

In 23 June 2011, he released a book with a collection of photographs from an expedition with a friend on Svalbard in March 2011.

He features on the Electric Six song "Love Song for Myself" on their seventh album Zodiac.

Wu produced and co-wrote two songs "Birds of Prey" and "Little Dreamer" for Christina Aguilera's 2010 album Bionic. 

Wu continues to DJ internationally, including tours around North America and South East Asia.
